Panchakarma in Thanu Suddhi

Therapies chosen for the person, not a package

At Thanu Suddhi we practise genuine Panchakarma. There is no readymade package — the physical condition of each patient is assessed first, and the therapies that follow are decided on that basis.

The Panchakarma Sequence

Seven classical therapies of purification

These are the common Panchakarma therapies offered at Thanu Suddhi, generally administered in sequence as a complete purification process — cleansing the body "from mouth to rectum."

01

Snehapanam

A progressive ghee therapy (Ghritham) that helps optimise the level of good fat in the body. A decrease in good fat leads to dryness, which paves the way for disease and reduces the body's efficiency. In Snehapanam, medicated ghee or oil is taken orally by the patient, typically over 7 days depending on the level of dryness. The herbal combination used varies by patient — some aimed at reducing stress, others at boosting immunity. Snehapanam is an essential first step in the body-purification process.

02

Swedanam

A steaming procedure in which bodily toxins are expelled through the skin as sweat, cleansing toxins from the peripheral tissues. It helps relieve inflammation in the lymphatic system and extremities, and usually precedes the internal cleansing processes of Panchakarma.

03

Vamanam

Following Snehapanam, Vamanam is therapeutic emesis (medicine-induced vomiting). After continuous intake of medicated ghee or oil, the body reaches a stage where it can absorb no more; a medicated milk preparation then induces emesis, eliminating excess mucus, phlegm and unwanted water from the body. Patients typically feel relaxed and refreshed afterward. Vamanam is especially effective for sinusitis, migraine, neurological conditions, epilepsy, and issues like snoring or sleep apnea.

04

Virechanam

Therapeutic purgation that follows Snehapanam. Medicine is administered to cleanse the small intestine and, through it, the digestive system as a whole — the patient may visit the toilet 5 to 6 times depending on dosage. Virechanam also helps cleanse the liver and gall bladder, two organs closely tied to metabolism, aiding effective elimination of toxins.

05

Nasyakarma

The administration of medicine through the nose — an excellent therapy for conditions of the head and neck (thoracic and cervical region). It is generally given to patients with higher swelling or inflammation, helping to remove phlegm and toxins. The herb-and-oil combination used differs from patient to patient. Dhoopanam — inhaling medicated smoke through the nose and exhaling through the mouth — is often performed alongside Nasyam.

06

Vasthi

Therapeutic enema, considered one of the most important treatments in Panchakarma. The large intestine — the "trash heap" of the digestive tract — stores toxins, waste and unwanted bacteria, and cleansing it is one of the most profound aspects of the process. Medical compositions are administered rectally so the medicine reaches the intestine directly. Vasthi is an ideal treatment for allergies, hemiplegia, neurological and arthritic disorders, gout, sexual disorders, urological and spinal disorders, nephrology issues, constipation and irritable bowel movement.

07

Rakthamoksham

Once Vasthi has cleared the digestive system, the blood itself must be purified. Rakthamoksham removes existing impure blood in small quantities, encouraging production of new, pure blood that flows throughout the body. This helps clear complications related to blood flow, removes toxins, improves complexion and immunity. It is used to treat skin diseases, psoriasis, gout and allergies. With Rakthamoksham, the Panchakarma process is complete.

Beyond Panchakarma

Other Ayurvedic treatments at Thanu Suddhi

These therapies are offered both as preparatory steps before Panchakarma and as standalone treatments for specific conditions.

Abhyangaswedanam

A two-part preparatory treatment — medicated oil massage (Abhyangam, also called Uzhichil) followed by herbal steam (Swedhanam). A great detoxifying and rejuvenating treatment on its own.

Dhara / Pizhichil

A continuous stream of medicated liquid — oil, buttermilk, milk or coconut water — poured over the body. Relaxes muscles, improves blood flow, and eases stress, fatigue, insomnia and headache.

Shirodhara

A form of Dhara involving a gentle, continuous pour of liquid over the forehead. Used for eye conditions, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, premature greying, neurological disorders and memory loss.

Kizhi

An Ayurvedic massage using a mildly heated pouch of herbal ingredients, often given early in a treatment course. Improves flexibility, relieves stiffness, and promotes sound sleep.

Ela Kizhi

A bolus made from medicated leaves, heated in oil and applied to the body as soft, warm punches. Effective for arthritis, spondylitis, lumbago, frozen shoulder, sciatica and sports injuries.

Njavara Kizhi

Njavara rice, treated in milk and medicated decoction, is used to prepare a bolus applied over the body. Strengthens nerves, relieves arthritis, and nourishes and softens the skin.

Udhvarthanam

An invigorating massage using medicated herbal powder, rubbed vigorously on areas of fat accumulation to increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage. Ideal for rheumatic conditions, obesity and early ageing.
